When most people hear the word creatine, they picture heavy weights, bigger muscles and explosive workouts.

And that reputation is well deserved. Creatine is one of the most extensively researched supplements for supporting strength, power and high-intensity exercise.

But your muscles aren’t the only part of your body that requires a steady supply of energy.

Your brain does, too.

Researchers have been investigating whether creatine may help support memory, mental processing and cognitive resilience—especially when the brain is tired, stressed or operating with limited energy.

Your Brain Has a Serious Energy Demand

Although the brain represents only a small percentage of your total body weight, it requires an enormous amount of energy to keep you thinking, remembering, reacting and making decisions.

That energy is supplied primarily through adenosine triphosphate, better known as ATP.

ATP is often described as the body’s energy currency. Every muscle contraction, nerve signal and complex thought requires it.

Creatine helps support the body’s phosphocreatine system, which can rapidly regenerate ATP when energy demand increases. This is the same basic process that helps your muscles produce energy during a hard set—and it also exists within the brain.

One of the best-known studies on creatine and cognition was published in 2003.

In the double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, young adult vegetarians consumed five grams of creatine per day for six weeks. Researchers reported improvements in working memory and performance on a test involving reasoning and rapid information processing.

The fact that the participants were vegetarians is important. Because creatine is naturally present in foods such as meat and seafood, people who eat little or no animal food may begin with lower creatine stores and could experience a larger response to supplementation.

Since then, researchers have continued examining creatine’s effects on:

  • Short-term and working memory

  • Mental processing speed

  • Reasoning and problem-solving

  • Attention and reaction time

  • Cognitive performance during fatigue

  • Memory in older adults

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that creatine may provide cognitive benefits in adults, particularly for memory. However, the researchers rated evidence for processing speed, executive function and attention as less certain, meaning larger and better-controlled studies are still needed.

In other words, creatine is promising—but it should not be marketed as a guaranteed intelligence booster.

Where Creatine May Shine: A Brain Under Stress

Creatine’s cognitive effects may be most noticeable when the brain is operating under difficult conditions.

Think:

  • A night of poor sleep

  • Long workdays

  • Intense mental demands

  • Heavy physical training

  • Travel across time zones

  • The increasing energy challenges associated with aging

In a controlled study involving 24 hours of sleep deprivation, participants who supplemented with creatine experienced less deterioration in certain measures of reaction time, mood and tasks that placed significant demand on the prefrontal cortex.

A 2024 study also found that a high single dose of creatine affected markers of brain energy metabolism and reduced declines in cognitive performance and processing speed during sleep deprivation. The dose used in that experiment was much higher than a typical daily supplement serving, so the results should not be interpreted as a reason to take unusually large amounts without professional guidance.

These findings do not mean creatine can replace sleep.

They suggest that a stronger cellular energy reserve may help the brain remain more resilient when normal energy production is under pressure.

 

What About Creatine and Aging?

Brain energy metabolism can become less efficient as we get older. That has led researchers to investigate whether creatine could help support cognition throughout the aging process.

A meta-analysis examining memory in healthy people found that creatine supplementation produced a modest overall improvement in memory, with a larger effect observed among adults between 66 and 76 years old. The researchers did not find the same benefit in the younger participants included in the analysis.

A more recent systematic review also concluded that creatine may be associated with cognitive benefits in generally healthy older adults, while emphasizing that the current body of evidence remains limited and requires more high-quality clinical trials.

That makes creatine especially interesting for adults who want to preserve both physical and mental performance as they age.

It supports the muscles you need to remain strong and active while potentially supporting the energy systems involved in memory and cognitive resilience.

Can Creatine Support Mood?

Researchers have also explored the relationship between creatine metabolism, brain energy and mood-related conditions.

There are promising early findings, but this area of research is not developed enough to describe creatine as a proven mood stabilizer or treatment for depression. It should never be used as a replacement for mental-health care or prescribed medication.

A more accurate takeaway is that creatine plays a role in brain energy metabolism, and researchers are continuing to study whether supporting that system could complement established approaches to mental and neurological health.

Does Everyone Experience a Mental Boost?

Probably not.

Studies involving healthy, well-rested young adults have produced mixed results. One six-week trial, for example, found no significant improvement in cognitive processing among non-sleep-deprived young adults taking creatine.

Results may depend on several factors:

  • Age

  • Diet

  • Baseline creatine levels

  • Sleep and stress levels

  • The dose and duration used

  • The type of cognitive task being measured

Creatine may provide the greatest cognitive support when energy availability is already limited rather than producing an obvious stimulant-like effect in everyone who takes it.

You may not “feel” creatine working the way you feel caffeine.

It works by supporting the energy system underneath your performance.

The Most Researched Form of Creatine

The majority of positive human research has been conducted using creatine monohydrate.
